Patricia Bartaby

March 28, 1925 – April 26, 2017

Patricia Marian Bartaby of Vancouver, beloved wife of the late William George Bartaby, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2017 at the age of 92 years.

Patricia was born in London, England on March 28, 1925. The eldest daughter of Percy and Lillian Willis of Camden Town. She attended Dame Alice Owens School for Publican’s Daughters where she became a talented seamstress and knitter for which she won awards while at school. During the second world war, at the age of fourteen, she and her sisters, Thelma and Susanne, were evacuated to Kettering in the English countryside. She would often tell stories about her time in Kettering and would laugh about wearing her gas mask to avoid crying while grating horseradish and cringe about sometimes only having horse meat and potatoes to eat. At the age of 17 she returned to London and started working for the Central Office of Information, a job which she loved. She married her husband William in 1951, and worked for British Rail before traveling along with her daughter Jane to join William in Canada in 1958.

Pat traveled with her pioneering husband Bill across America in a semi transport truck delivering cars. Later, she visited Bill while he was working in places like Stewart BC building the Alaska Highway and Lillooet BC building the Seton dam before settling in Vancouver.

Patricia spent many years volunteering with Vancouver Olympic Club, helping to organize track meets, and at the Vancouver Health Department, weighing newborn babies.

Vancouver was far from home for Pat and Bill but they visited England frequently. They also loved taking  cruises and they enjoyed many trips to the Mediterranean and once to Fiji.

Pat was a perfectionist in everything she did. She sewed and knitted beautiful clothes for her family and would not finish anything until it was just right.

Pat was never without a smile and always up for anything. Many happy times were spent with her family picnicking or camping at Gabriola Island and around BC and holidaying at the Alders beach resort on Vancouver Island, a particular favourite activity being the annual sandcastle competition.

Patricia is survived by her loving daughter Jane Marion Scherk, son-in-law David Lawrence Scherk, Grandsons Emlyn Daniel Scherk and Jonathan William Scherk, her sister Sue Cox of England and Thelma Dobson of South Australia as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families in England and Australia.

In last three years of her life she moved to Hart House seniors residence in Victoria, where she was loved and cared for exceptionally. A most grateful thank you to everyone at Hart House Victoria BC for all their love and care.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at 2:30 pm on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 3580 West 17th Avenue, Vancouver. Another small service will be held on May 17th  at Hart House 1961 Fairfield Road at 3pm.

Any donations in Pat's honor should be directed to A.S.K. Seniors day care or the Alzheimer's society of B.C.
