Mr. John Dogherty, beloved husband of Phyllis Hunt and wonderful dad to his children Elizabeth and Patrick, passed away suddenly on Monday, April 9th, 2018 at the age of 69 years. John was predeceased by his parents, Margaret (McBride) and Donald Dogherty.
John was born in Montreal and his studies took him from a BA in Economics at Drake University in Iowa, to his much beloved Venice, to graduation from the UBC School of Architecture in 1976.
John started his professional career before graduation by joining the Justice Development Commission under the direction of the Deputy Attorney General of BC. He also worked as a consultant and advisor on numerous government projects and in 1980 he began working for Public Works Canada, where he became part of the facilities group responsible for the overall management of federal buildings and contract management. He had a long career with the federal government as a manager and administrator of their many facilities, including Vancouver’s largest heritage restoration project, the Sinclair Centre, and the new RCMP headquarters in Surrey.
His retirement in 2015 gave John the freedom to engage his ever abiding interest in travel to foreign places. He and Phyllis enjoyed many cruises around the world, including the highlight visit to Antarctica. John will be lovingly remembered by his brother Dean (Lucia Brodie) and his sister Elaine Davidson (Al). John’s huge smile will also be missed by many nieces and nephews, and his Friday Night Movie Pals will now have to make their own viewing choices.
As per John’s wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
