Rosina Bastone

Rosina Bastone

We are saddened to announce the passing of our mother, Rosina Bastone on January 28th, 2017. Born on September 25, 1924 in Carolei, Italy, to Luigi Fata and Maria Segretti.

Predeceased by her husband Luigi in 1998, her beloved son, Anthony, in 2016, sisters Carmena, Luisa, Teresa, Ida, Erminia and Lena. Survived by sisters Assunta, Gilda and Gina; children Maria, Teresa, Gina, Rita (John), Lucia (Marco), Franco (Susan), Gino and daughter in-law Maria; grandchildren Angela, Lisa, Ana (Jay), Mara (Danny), Anthony (Jill), Jonathan (Olivia) Matthew (Hollis), Janet, Michelle, Jean-Luc, Ashley (Richard), Angela; great-grandchildren Mia, Sofia, Sienna and Amelia; step-grandchildren Anthony and Natasha, and numerous loving nieces, nephews and extended family.

Mom immigrated to Vancouver in 1953 and embraced Canadian life. She taught herself English well enough to be a resource for her new Canadian peers. She was a feisty, determined, tireless and caring Mama Bear – there was nothing she would not do for us.  We are ever grateful for the many wonderful traditions and memories she has left us with.

Mom also had a competitive edge – this was very apparent during any of the poker or bingo nights hosted at her home on Blenheim Street or at the Ridge Bowling Lanes, of which she was a member for many years.  Until recent years, mom's house was a gathering place for many friends, neighbours or family members, whether they were shopping or had a doctor's appointment on Broadway, an overflow from Greek Day, or just returning from a night out, Rosina's door was always open.  Blenheim Street will never seem the same.

We wish to thank the second floor staff at Blenheim Lodge for their exceptional care of our mother this past year.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 2028 W 7th Avenue, Vancouver, with Father Jules, celebrant. Entombment to follow at Ocean View Burial Park, Abbey Mausoleum.

Donations in Rosina’s memory may be made to The BC Children’s Hospital Foundation (, or to The Food Bank.
